Here is the build I just completed for entry in the Tasman Cup Proxy Race 2017 in Australia. It is my take on the Cooper T70 Climax that Phil Hill drove for Team McLaren in the 1965 Tasman series of races. Team leader Bruce McLaren piloted the new T79, while Phil was invited to drive the surviving and updated T70 raced by Bruce the previous year. Both cars were commissioned from the Cooper works, but entered in the down under series by McLaren Racing. The aluminum chassis sides were painted in Cooper green, but the rest of the fibreglass bodywork was painted white. Bruce's car was finished with a green stripe, while Phil's car wore a blue stripe in deference to its American driver.
My starting point was a Tassie Resins shell of the T79 provided by Phil Kalbfell.
I carved away the the bits I didn't want...
...and then started filling the etched lines and thin areas. I built up the eyebrows over the front suspension mounts and re-profiled the bodywork around the front of the windscreen. I should have done more there but ran out of time. Also cut away the cowl/dashboard and replaced it with a smaller panel per the original car.
A basic wire and brass chassis per my recent builds, no hinges or tricky bits here, and simplified suspension details would have to suffice as I was very close to the deadline.
The painted shell was fitted to the chassis...
The colours and numbers were added using decals on hand. An Immense Miniatures "flat" driver torso was fitted with an old M/T Resins head with the appropriate helmet style for ol' Phil. Styrene sheet glued to the chassis carried the exhaust headers and intake trumpets.
The motor is an SRP 16 per the series specs, the wheels are from RS, inserts and mirrors from Tassie and urethane tires from Dart. The intakes are wiring ferrules and the rollover bar is a paperclip. A few laps around my tiny test track confirmed the car ran in the right direction at least. How competitive it will be against the other entrants in the proxy, only time will tell.
