Before I say anything about this proxy entry, I must say that I have been following "datto's" work on the Mosport livery and I am thoroughly impressed never having attempted the kind of ground-up build he has done. If you were ever hooked on the GPL racing simulation game, you know about the different skins you are able to download. Well, we basically did a re-skin on a Scalextric Gurney Eagle that was cosmeticly challenged after a lot of trips to the floor. Doing the Mclaren adds another to my "Bruce" collection and gave me an excuse to by a new unblemished Eagle. Well, it sounded easy, but constructing that Engine was no joke. The decaling is all done on my wife's inkjet printer. Other than a " ScaleAuto" flag and Paul Gage tires it's bone stock Scalextric underneath. Yes, I know the wheels are wrong, but they're close and I kind of wanted to stay OEM with it. well, here it is.... Val

Hi Val
That's an interesting approach and the car looks convincing. How much alteration did you have to make to the main body? It would be good to see some more photographs particularly of the engine.
Best Regards
David

David, There are a number of louvres and two gas intakes on the Eagle that had to be ground and filled. The nose had to be filed off a bit so it's a tad more rounded. Then from the driver back on the top half of the body was sawed off and the BRM engine was fabricated out of wood. Lastly, the driver's head was replaced. Here are some more photos as requested.... Hi Val,
Isn't this the car that Art at Dart was going to cast?
Cool conversion, congrats.

Chris,
I really didn't investigate the resin offerings out there, I had just been thinking of converting an Eagle to an M5A for some time. I received an invite in the mail for this event and have been running with a couple of other Canadian folks that are entered, so I figured now was the time to try it. It is challenging working on these things with such small bodies, but I am used to starting at the back of the field and staying there... so, why not? Already lost a mirror and tailpipe testing it.

Val, that's an interesting conversion. I do admire the work that went into scratchbuilding the BRM V12 engine. Bravo! I just checked my Scalextric Eagle and the stock wheelbase measurement does fall within the parameters for the McLaren M5A per the rules, so you are okay there. Depending on the PG tires you are using, the rear track width and minimum/maximum tire dimensions should also be fine, but I urge you to verify them before sending me the car. You might also have to grind down the plastic magnet surround and some of the gearbox on the underside of the car to meet the minimum ground clearance regs. Give it a look. I really hate handing out penalties for technical infractions. It just puts a damper on the event.

Stewart,
Thanks for the encouraging words on my attempt at the V12. The tires on it currently are the PG exact replacements for the Scalextric Eagle (tread and all). I'm pretty sure it's clearing the .0625" minimum, but now I'm about to put down the pad and check it again. One question, how do you keep the mirrors and pipes on these things other than the obvious answer of keeping them in the slot?

Yup, checked the height under the gears and it was illegal, so I pulled out a set of CBs I was saving and found some actual Mclaren inserts, slotit gears/axles, and another set of PGs. Looks better and is legal, but so much for the "stock conversion". Thanks again Stewart! Sorry for the messy work table.... Val

Well, I just came across an article on SCI where someone did this same conversation, exactly the way I did it only better!? I believe I'm about to tear out the V12 and re-do it as I have some issues with its construction. Mistake? Yes probably.....but.

Wise words... but I want to submit the best entry possible. Besides I usually get trampled on the performance end of these things anyway.

It looks to me that you are being a bit hard on yourself! It is a good representation of the car, a very good effort, why not just start another build and do what you think is better on another(different ) car? Regards Nigel

Val, the wheels/tires/axles/gears upgrade should yield substantial benefits in reliability and performance. The BRM V12 looks great as it is. I'd leave it, if I were you. If you want some details to fuss over, see if you can get the front suspension a little closer to the McLaren design with exposed shock/spring unit and wide spaced upper wishbone. Great work so far.

Chris, And I, Nigel, and Stewart...
I really appreciate the comments and advice, thank you very very much I find the level of building from the other regulars on this board to be extremely high when it comes to the craftsmanship and devotion to historical accuracy. My normal proxy build on my home board, although the emphasis still being on historical appearance rather than just performance, is a fantasy livery which affords one a bit of wiggle room on the concourse end. I have monitored this site for some time and greatly admired the work I've seen. I received an email invite to participate in this event and having attended a number of races at Mosport as a boy in the late sixties (although not this one in particular) I decided to take a swipe at it. I also have a couple of my normal running mates in this field as well. Again I am attempting to deliver an entrant that is close to the quality of the rest of the field, but I do also have four other proxy cars I am constructing for the for long haul venues in 2018... All that said (and being on a budget so the wife doesn't kill me) this is the car that will be in the paddock, and it will be the very best I can produce....

New engine buildup finished. Handmade exhaust system as well. Assuming there is a next time, I am certainly choosing a subject with more body panels...
