I have always intended to build a Lotus 25, chassis number R4 to be precise, as it was in this car that Jim Clark won all his grands prix during his championship winning 1963 season. This is my jelutong wood master which has been on and off my workbench over the last couple of years and it is still not ready for moulding yet. I really should get a move on as it will be the 50th anniversary of this championship winner next year. David

David, if I won the lottery I'd make you an offer on that Lotus right now! But suspect you probably won't part with that gem. We will be looking forward to a finished David Lawson R 4 in the spring
of 2013. Only 10 or11 months. ;D

Do you gentlemen have any idea how shocking it is to be forced to recognize that an event that one thinks of as relatively recent is actually nearly a half-century in the past!

David, I am pretty sure the 50th Anniversary date of when Jim Clark locked up his and Lotus' first championship passed, although I suppose they didn't award the trophies until the end of 1963. So you still have a few weeks (months?) Some of us may not be around to see R4 completed if you wait until the Diamond Jubilee.

Like most of my plans, finishing this car for the 50th anniversary of Clark's championship completely failed.
The master has been sitting in a box since the start of this thread and I have no idea when I will go back to it, mind you after 50 years what's another couple of years.
I did start another Lotus build yesterday which I will race at Wolverhampton in November but I will describe the build in a new thread in the near future.

Another brief post in this painfully slow build.
EM and Mark - I'm not sure if any of us will survive to see it finished.
The original jelutong carving which is to scale measurements is the master painted green in the background and I've done nothing with it in months..... the balsa carving in the foreground is a new idea for a car I'm working on. I'm not sure which of these two builds I'll finish first. David

David, You must stop torturing us with these pictures of the unfinished Lotus 25! But, flash ahead 50 years... The master is discovered in a box and eventually makes its way to eBay (we'll suspend belief and assume that eBay survives another 50 years). One of the 1,500 members of this Forum (hopefully my grandson!) buys it, and then posts a picture with the question, "Okay, can somebody tell me about this shell? I know it's a Lotus 25... and it looks great, but who made it and why didn't the maker ever finish it?"

Mark, These things just take time. My own Lotus 33 build had nearly stalled but then I got lucky; I came across a mysterious box containing just about all the spare parts I need to finish it off! Great work as always David. Is the balsa version carved from a solid piece or made up from a box-like structure "ready" to drop a chassis in? I'm guessing the latter due to the different grain pattern on the side.

These things do take time and in my case an eternity.
I often imagine that in the future my stuff will be in one of those boxes under the dealers tables at a slot car swapmeet.
More examples of unfinished builds from my storage boxes, there are others somewhere but I couldn't find them when I was taking this picture today. I really do have no idea whether many of these will ever be finished but as I enjoy the process of making masters or balsa carvings it doesn't really matter to me. I suspect the Lotus 25 will be finished as I need it for my Jim Clark/Lotus stable of slot cars. Most of these could be finished within a couple of weeks if I concentrated on them but I like flitting from one thing to another. David
PS - I like your sense of humour John, I'm not sure if Mark picked up on it....

David,
Have you started another Lotus before finishing R4, or am I mistaken in my identification?
The Ferrari looks superb by the way. Please don't leave that one too long in the box!
And I'm embarrassed to say that I can't identify the car to the right of the Ferrari.. a Cooper?

Mark
The car behind the Ferrari is my Jochen Rindt 1966 German GP Cooper-Maserati that I started many months ago.
The other Lotus is a balsa bodyshell which is going to be a unique car.... the original jelutong carving will eventually be a resin shell R4
