I've had a look around this site and am astonished by the quality of builds. So I thought that I had better join and start building.
I had Scalextric as a kid in the 70's and loved it. A few years ago due to an injury I had to stop my rallying and change job I then picked up a hand throttle again. I have run a little hot and cold over the last few years with slot cars but am getting pulled into modelling and possibly Proxy races. I always did seem to got more satisfaction out of building cars than competing. I have spent a lot of time over the last few years reading about F1 especially the periods this site is aimed at. I love the stories from the 50's and 60's, real road circuits, drivers changing gear. I especially enjoyed Tony Brook's recent book.
I am planning on starting a build in the new year.
Cheers, Hugh

Welcome to the Forum, Hugh.
You are certainly a fellow of good judgement as you mentioned Tony Brooks, certainly one of the finest F1 drivers of the mid to late 1950s until his retirement from F1 racing at the end of the 1961 season. Please keep checking in, and we look forward to seeing your work in the New Year.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm fascinated by Mr Brooks and his record is I believe second to only one, the boy; well in open wheels at least.
I buit a few Airfix kits with my son last summer and before that its several decades since I welled a paint brush and glue!
Do I upload an avatar?

Hugh,
Yes, if you go to "View Profile" and then "Edit Profile" you will see the window/buttons for adding or changing your avatar. You may upload a file as long as it less than 1 MB. The recommended size for the picture is 150 x 150 px.
Cheers,

Hi Hugh, welcome to the forum.
In addition to information about how things might be done, you'll find that information about what cars, bodies etc are available is plentiful.
I suppose you'll be looking for a Connaught.......
Peter.

Hi Peter, I am leaning at the moment towards a BRP Cooper but having found the Pre-Wing web site and seen their BRM P261. Well Tony didn't drive it but it the most beautiful F1 car ever built in my opinion. I've just finished reading Doug Nye's BRM Vol1, what a read, vol2 is expected for christmas.
I've recently been given my late father in law's model making equipment, he built WW2 aircraft. So have plenty of stuff to get going. I'm going to have to build a table over Christmas and will also oder my first car. I'm going to have a look at what events are coming up latter in the year as I like a target to work towards. I work away from home and stay in digs so have plenty of time and luckily room for building and adjusting. I can set my Ninco track up in my room room for running.

Yes it is, (but as a nod to folks who prefer other eras, perhaps I might suggest that the BRM P261 is the most beautiful F1 car built in the 1.5L era.. or 1960s if you prefer... ) You will enjoy Volume 2, and can then look forward to Volume 3 which covers the BRM P261s and racing history in detail.

Yes Mark, I agree as Dan's Eagles were very special too but of course of a latter era.
I'm hopping the man in red who pops down the chimney will have Volume 2 and 3 in his sack but I will have to wait and see. I'm still amazed that Alfred Owen stuck with PB and Mays for so long; the way they ran the place was staggering!

Hugh
I have the three BRM volumes which make fabulous reading as well as being essential research for any BRM build.
I agree about May and Berthon, a right couple of chancers and amazing that Alfred Owen allowed their incompetence and excesses for so long.
Even though I am a committed Lotus enthusiast I have to agree that the P261 was a beautifully designed and engineered car and in my opinion was the best looking grand prix car of the 1960s.

I've just spent sometime, well a few hours reading the GPdG series reports and found them to be inspirational. The year on year improvement is amazing and the Monza track in Carerra makes me want to change from Ninco immediately. Then I can have banked curves.
I will wait until the mad postal rush is over and order a kit to start. I'm thinking of a PP with chassis and body to begin with.
