G'day from Australia, My name is James Henderson and I am a retired 62 year old TAFE Teacher. My interest in slot cars originated in 1965 or thereabouts. It went on the back burner when I discovered girls. It was rekindled in 1979 when my wife bought me the Scalextric Mini Racing Set. Then life took a turn and the set was put away in the loft. In 2006 I was put in a position where I could reignite my interest in slot cars. I have two main interests. Collecting a representation of every winning Le Mans car from 1923 onwards. I have most of them from 1937 to the present day. The other interest is a representation of every F1 world champion's car (Driver not Constructor) from 1950 to today. Most of my collection are 'shelf queens' and will never see a track. In fact I have just purchased a Scalextric Digital system to put down to race. Why my interest in this scratchbuilt forum? Most of my cars are RTR examples, a few are painted kits that come complete. But now things are getting difficult and there are still gaps in the cabinet. For example the 1966 and 1967 winning Brabham's. I have just discovered the Pre-Wing cars and am in the process of purchasing the Brabham BT19 for 1966 (Sir Jack Brabham) and the Brabham BT24 for Hulme's 1967 car. These are both scratch built examples. I am also in the process of building a small workshop and although I have some modelling skills I am hoping to rely on your expertise in fore filling my goals. All help will be greatly appreciated. Regard James

Hello James.
I'd guess that a lot of us have had an interruption to our Slot Car hobby as a result of discovering a little 'something else'. I'm glad to hear your interest in early Le Mans cars whilst there will be others who will welcome your interest in late 1960's cars.
I'm delighted to have you with us.
Peter.

James welcome to the forum, hope you find plenty of info and help. There are some great builders on here. You should also have a look at the Tasman Cup builds, there are some nice cars there and some good chassis. There may be builders local to you that can offer help and advice.

Welcome James, Now that Prewing offer a BT19, BT20 and BT24, I believe all of the Championship Drivers' principal cars from 1950 through 1970 are (or were) available in 1/32 scale in one form or another. I don't know how the representation is over the next 45 years.. but if you have a collection through 1970, you've covered all the really good cars. Good luck with your venture into building. I believe that the Prewing Brabhams will fit on the narrow Penelope Pitlane brass chassis, and another option would be the Beardog spring Steel Chassis available through AB Slotsport in the UK or Electric Dreams in the US.

Hello James
Good luck with completing your collection and you will get any help you ask for on this forum.
Two comments I would make. I've tried themed collections over the years but always find that there are so many other interesting cars and race meetings that I build for and I never complete the original collection.
My second comment is that while you build a shelf queen, build a second identical car at the same time then you can enjoy racing it at home or send it off to a proxy somewhere and have the enjoyment of seeing how it performs.
David

Hello James ... I've tried themed collections over the years but always find that there are so many other interesting cars and race meetings that I build for and I never complete the original collection. David I've also tried themed collections.. I haven't had as much progress as I had hoped in completing the Owen Racing BRMs that competed in Championship F1 events from 1950-69. But, I can't attribute my lack of progress to completing other cars for various race meets: Year

Most of the models are available or can be modified from an earlier or later model. I would like to build the 1961 BRM P48/57 some day, but that's not likely to happen... I already have too many shells waiting unfinished in various bins.

Hi James, good to see another Aussie on the board. There is lots of useful info here and lots of knowledge and experience to draw on here too, lots of helpers willing to help when you got a question. You might find yerself looking to the pre 50s' and into the 70s' cars also. There are excellent examples of those here too.

G'day All, Thank you for your kind welcomes. I'm looking forward in participating in this forum. I have had some time to read some of the threads and getting some idea of the interests of forum members. So at this time I won't talk to much about my Le Mans cars and concentration on the F1 cars. I suppose the name of the Forum gives me a clue of the interests of the members. In response to Mark Huber's comment regarding the chassis for the Pre-Wing Brabhams. I have had very supportive communications with Mel, at Pre-wings and Gary at MRE and both have confirmed that the Penelope Pitlane PP-SM1S chassis is suitable. It seems to me that the slot car community in the UK is very close nit. I am hoping to return to the old country next year and am beginning to formulate a plan to get to the 2015 UK Slot Festival. Hopefully it will be held at the end of May (I don't do cold or snow any more)and at Gaydon, I lived in Bloxham for ten years. If I get there I hope to meet some of you guys and to bring one of my scratch builds to compare my standards and see where I'm going wrong. OK some questions. I'm having difficulty finding suitable cars for the following years. Any ideas? 1982 Williams FW08 - I'm waiting on the Slotwing to see if that will be a suitable donor car 1983 Brabham BT52B - At the moment I'm looking at Pattos for the starting point. 1984 McLaren MP 4/2 1985 McLaren MP 4/2B 1986 McLaren MP 4/2C Was it cigarette sponsorship that kept the major slot car companies away from producing these cars? Regards James.

James, Betta & Classic sell a large selection of Lexan shells that represent F1 cars from the 1980s and beyond. I don't know how scale accurate these shells are. I have quite a few shells from Betta & Classic, but all of mine are from the "Classic" line which ends with mid 1970s cars. bettaandclassic.com/1-32%20grandprix1.htm
