After a period of discussion and reflection, I have decided to add a second class of cars to the VRAA Proxy for 2015. The rules for the primary class for 1961-65 1.5 litre F1 cars will remain the same. The new class will be for 1954-60 2.5 litre Grand Prix cars and will feature a somewhat relaxed approach to scale and detail in the hope of attracting those who may not be ready to scratch build a shell and chassis, but would like to tune a Cartrix or Scalextric ready-to-run car, or fettle a Penelope Pitlane or George Turner kit. Of course, scratch builds are welcome as well. Here are the detailed VRAA 2015 Rules:
VRAA 2015 F1 PROXY RULES
MISSION STATEMENT
The VRAA promotes sportsmanlike conduct on the track and on this forum; the encouragement of better model-making and scratchbuilding skills; openness and transparency in car building and tuning data so that all entrants can learn and improve; and the celebration of the history of Formula One racing.
Okay, let’s get this series on track again for a new season…
As discussed in the VRAA Feedback And Suggestions thread (on SCI), there will be two racing classes in the upcoming season:
GP1.5 – For Grand Prix cars of the 1.5 litre Formula One era 1961-65
and
GP2.5 – For Grand Prix cars of the 2.5 litre Formula One era 1954-60.
ENTRY REGISTRATION (See separate Registration thread on SCI)
Entries will be limited to one car per entrant in each class. The maximum number of entries in each class will be 20. The maximum number of entries of the two classes combined will be 32. Please request an entry in the Registration thread.
2015 SEASON DATES AND RACE VENUES
July 15, 2015: All entries must be paid
September 1, 2015: All cars must be delivered to me
September 2015: Tech Inspection, Concours Judging and Season Opener at RIR’s Mesa Roja
October 2015 – February 2016: Six races at tracks in Canada and the USA as specified in the separate “Tracks and Schedule” thread
Late February 2016: Race 8 - Season Finale at Ferrari1950’s Autodrome
GP1.5 CLASS - CAR CONSTRUCTION RULES
Entries must be 1/32 scale (as claimed by the manufacturer) model slot cars of F1 cars from the 1961-65 1.5 liter period.
Car Body Construction and Appearance:
Only hard bodies (wood, resin, fiberglass, injection molded plastic, or fabricated plastic) will be allowed.
Entries must be a reasonably scale representation of a specific, historical Formula One car, in its authentic livery, as it raced or practiced for an FIA Championship F1 Grand Prix during the 1961-1965 period. The historically accurate race number is not required. All entries must race with the race number pre-approved by the Race Director during the Registration process. Fantasy paint schemes and fantasy cars are not permitted.
As a minimum, all entries must include the following modeled detail: a period-appropriate driver with head, arms, hands, and partial steering wheel; period appropriate wheel inserts; and, except where not present on or visible from the exterior of the actual car, clear windscreen, roll bar, some 3-D engine detail, gearbox, exhaust system and mirror(s). A reasonable attempt to model the suspension detail of the actual car -- at minimum, upper and lower “A-arms”, radius rods and shocks/springs (if present) -- is required. See-through interiors -- where the track can be seen when looking straight down around the driver -- and visible, undisguised motors and crown gears are prohibited.
Entries that fail to comply with Appearance rules will be assessed penalties in accordance with the “Schedule of Penalties” (see below).
Chassis and Running Gear:
Chassis may be fabricated using any material or stock manufactured excluding carbon fiber. Both commercially available and scratchbuilt chassis are permitted.
Chassis wheelbase length measurement must be to scale with a permitted tolerance of 1.50mm. If the wheelbase is not fixed, then measurements will be taken at both limits of chassis movement and those measurements must be within the permitted tolerance of 1.50mm. No car may have an overall width in excess of 50mm when measured between the widest part of the tires on either axle. A spreadsheet of scale wheelbase measurements is attached to the bottom of this post. Any dispute with the accuracy of these dimensions, must be posted publicly in this thread for review by all and a final ruling by the Race Director.
Minimum ground clearance is 1/16" (.0625", or 1.59 mm) except at gear, tires and guide.
Wheels, inserts and tires (see below for limits) should be in keeping with the period.
Tires:
Rears: 0.80" (20.32mm) minimum diameter, maximum width .2854" (7.25mm) at sidewall.
Fronts: 0.75" (19.05mm) minimum diameter, maximum width .2854 (7.25mm) at sidewall.
Min width .168 (4.25mm) at sidewall
Both front and rear tires must not have a contact patch of more than 7mm width where the tire meets the track at the start of the series.
Tires must be made from a rubber or urethane compound (no silicones or sponge rubber) and must be black or dark grey in color. No chemicals or oil may be applied to the tires. No clear paint or polish on front tires. Front tires must be soft enough to deflect under light thumbnail pressure.
Rear tires must have an outer sidewall bulge like the real cars did in the era. The inner sidewall does not have to have the bulge but must be radiused (rounded) from the sidewall to the tread area.
The "spec"/only legal motor is the BWA/DArt FF-050 motor with the label intact and visible. If the motor label is not visible from underneath the car, the body must be easily removable for Tech Inspection.
Gears may not be visible from above.
A single Guide is permitted and must not to be visible from directly above the car in the straight ahead position. No Slot.it wood Guide flags (or similar) and all Guides must be able to fit through a Scalextric R1 hairpin turn. No portion of the Guide that projects into the slot below the reference plane of the track surface may exceed the following dimensions:
Guide Blade Depth 0.225"/5.715mm
Guide Blade Thickness 0.065"/1.65mm
Guide Blade Length 0.827"/21.00mm
The above measurements will be verified with the car sitting on a flat, slotted setup block with the front tires in contact with the reference plane. If the front tires cannot make contact, the measurements will be made with the pickup braids flattened and the full front weight of the car bearing on the Guide.
No traction magnets are permitted.
Owners name and car class should be written on the bottom of the chassis.
Entries that fail to comply with Chassis and Running Gear rules will be assessed penalties in accordance with the “Schedule of Penalties” (see below). Easily correctable infractions may be fixed by the Race Director, with the permission of the Entrant, and will be assessed a one-time penalty. Minor infractions not easily correctable may be raced, at the discretion of the Race Director, but will be assessed penalties on a per race basis. Cars with major infractions of the rules and technical problems that jeopardize the safe and efficient conduct of the event will be excluded and returned to the Entrant for repair.

GP1.5 and GP2.5 classes must be raced separately.
Tires should be wiped clean before each Race Heat with a dry or damp cloth or finger. No solvents or other chemicals should be applied to the tires, including lighter fluid or Simple Green.
A car with a minor technical problem (lost screw, loose wheel, gear, braid , etc.) may be repaired by the Race Host before, during or between Race Heats, though a Race Heat should not be halted or delayed while such a repair is made. No penalty will be assessed beyond racing laps lost during the repair.
Any major repairs will only be made between races at the discretion of the Race Host and with the permission of the Entrant. Otherwise, a broken car will be returned to the Entrant for repair at his expense. The Race Director must be advised of all major repairs or car returns. No penalty will be assessed beyond Championship Points lost due to missed races.
Finishing order for each round of the proxy race will be determined by total number of laps and 10ths of laps, within a set amount of time. A minimum of 12 (maximum of 15) minutes racing time per car is required at each track. Fastest race laps must be recorded for each car.The points won according to the finishing positions for each round from first place to twenty-fourth are:
50-44-40-36-34-32-30-28-26-24-22-20-18-16-14-12-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3 with a fastest race lap bonus of 2 points.
At the conclusion of all the rounds, the total of all the points won, less any penalties assessed, shall determine the VRAA Champion in each class for this season.
