My name is Charles Le Breton. I am mainly interested in 1/32 RTR Hard Body racing but dabble in 1/24 metal. Activity mainly 1/32 local racing and entering 1/32 proxy events around the world. A little about myself.
It all started in 1960 when I traded my Triang/Hornby train set for one of the first Scalextric slot car sets sold in Christchurch, New Zealand. It was only an oval track with a couple of Lotus 16 GP cars at first but was soon up-graded to a figure 8. I was 14 at the time and my young brother 9-10. I recall we used an old alarm clock to run 10 lap timed races/time trials and averaged out to set lap record.
Around 1962-3 I entered my first Canterbury Championship. At the championship event I was the only kid with most competitors 40+. Around the same time I joined the Pioneer Amateur Sports Club which had just started a Slot Car Section. The track was 5 lanes and mounted over a full sized billiard table in the clubs billiards room. I am aware this was well before March 1963 as I have a copy of an article that appeared in the “PhotoReview” magazine published in March 1963.
I continued racing for a number of years including many competitions and the first 2-3 years of the 1/24th scale commercial track period. In the late 60’s however my racing increasingly concentrated on karting. My slot car racing finishing entirely around 1974 when I shifted to the North Island. I continued karting for another 10 years before finishing about 1990. The last 7-8 years as a race scrutineer as I had married and had a growing family by this time. In the meantime I had also raced sailing dinghies and trailer yachts from 1984 until 2009. I still work as a hobby sailmaker to keep the local sailors on the water.
My re-introduction to slot cars occurred around the time I retired in 2008. My brother was the instigator this time and it was not long before I followed suit. Initially it was Scalextric with magnets. In early 2009 however I spotted a Slot-it McLaren on a local auction site and this eventually lead us to race non-magnet and re-enter the racing scene.
About 5 years ago having time on my hands I started watching the results of some of the proxy races and am now a dedicated proxy racer. Events entered have included NZ Canam and Group 5, Tasman Cup, OZ Rally, VRAA, VRAAII, IPS and the WRP.
