My entry for the 1961 - 1965 VRAA class is going to be Graham Hill's BRM P57, winner of the 1962 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort. This was Hill's first GP win of his World Championship winning year. He was second on the grid with John Surtees on pole in his Lola Climax Mk4 and Jim Clark third in the Lotus 25. Clark took the lead at the start chased by Graham Hill and a fast-starting Dan Gurney in his Porsche 804. Clark began to have clutch problems and Hill took the lead and when Gurney dropped back with a gear lever problem the BRM driver was left untroubled to win by 27 seconds. Phil Hill, Ferrari 156, ran second for much of the race but in the closing stages was passed by Trevor Taylor, Lotus 24, who finished second despite colliding with Richie Ginther, BRM P48/57 while lapping him late in the race. Phil Hill and Giancarlo Baghetti gave Ferrari third and fourth. This version of the P57 had the troublesome stack pipe exhausts (they had a habit of falling off) and the mesh cover over the injection trumpets. As a teenager I thought the P57 a great looking car particularly with the stack pipes, although I know they're not to everyone's taste. I had the ViP version for my Scelextric set; not sure what happened to it. I'm using the Dave Jones' shell which is excellent and requires only minor modification, to the engine cover for the mesh over the injection trumpets. Which is just as well as I have three proxy cars underway - BRM P83 (see my GP2015 thread) and Ferrari 801 for the '50s VRAA (post to come shortly). Anyway the body is underway with the hole cut for the mesh, the stack pipes made, roll bar fitted and the windscreen shaped and fitted. The photos below are self-explanatory I think. I've chosen to use a Beardog chassis rather than make my own, on the basis it should be quicker (and probably better!) but I'm going to have to alter the upper front suspension as the BRM had wishbones rather than rocker arms. Hopefully more next week. Best Regards David

Nice car David.
Is the ignition box something you have added and did you steal the mesh from my electric razor?

Excellent work so far David. Those inserts look like Correct P-57 dunlops, where did you find them?
I'm building one at the moment too, from a Dave Jones body, Advise: fit the driver now! that cockpit is the narrowest I've ever encountered, he'll require some aggressive massage work.
Great build....carry on regardless.

David, your cars always have such finesse in the details and this one is no different. I love the metal surround of the intake screen, the exhaust stacks (what are they made from?) and the fine brass windscreen edging. I assume the two dots on the nose are something to do with the twin vertical vanes in front of the radiator? Have you replaced the molded-in ones?
I look forward to watching the rest of this build and the Ferrari 801 as well. Thanks for entering the VRAA 2015.

Thank you gentlemen. I’ll respond to your comments and questions in one post. John, the ignition box is a bit of scrap from a Maxi Models gearbox casing other bits of which I’ve used on the Cooper T81 and BRM P83 – never throw anything away! You said I couldn’t have your razor so I used some mesh I bought from www.themeshcompany.com/products/Fine-Mesh---0.5mm---0.025mm-Hole-Size.html. Chris, the wheel inserts are either DART or RS Slotracing – I’ve had them some time and can’t remember which. George Turner makes similar ones but I don’t know what wheels they fit. Thanks for the tip about fitting the driver – I’ll send Graham to Weight Watchers immediately! Stewart, the mesh surround is thin aluminium sheet cut and shaped to fit the hole cut in the engine cover spine with the mesh then shaped to fit in the surround (fiddly!). The stack pipes are made from aluminium tubes, slightly tapered with aluminium wire glued into them; all held together with drilled and filed brass strip. The dots on the nose are filler in two cavities in the glass fibre which appeared when I opened up the nose. I haven’t decided whether to replace the moulded in vanes – I’ll decide after the shell is primed. I may regret adding the brass strip to hold the screen given Chris’s comments about the rear cockpit width. Best Regards David

Here is the latest progress on the BRM P57. The shell has been primed and I’ve more or less sorted out all the ancillary bits and pieces. Extensive surgery has been applied to the Immense Miniatures Graham Hill. As Chris warned me the P57 cockpit is very slim and the BWA slim-line motor doesn’t leave much room for ay significant body mass! The Beardog chassis has been modified slightly to accommodate the upper wishbones of the front suspension and to add the suspension detail. The wheels are from RS Slot Racing and the tyres from Paul Gage. One or two things still need to be trial fitted to the car but I should be in a position to put on a first top-coat (probably Maserati Rifle Grey) this weekend. Regards David

Hi David, as they say "My you've been a busy" several fantastic creations you've got going on there. Just as inspiration, here's what I have in the pipeline, my 578 almost finished, a Dave Jones body like yours. And graham looks just the same as yours. Great builds,... Chris

Superb work David I always have trouble with the N top arms on BRM models and you have done those beautifully. Tony Rudd even used that style on the later H16 models.
Keep it coming

Of the three proxy cars I’m building the P57 is progressing more quickly than the BRM P83 and the Ferrari 801. All three are at the bodywork painting stage but because the P57 is a single colour (the other two have nosebands) it’s a bit further ahead. The photographs below show: the body after base coat had been applied with the bits and pieces which need to be attached to it; and then after clear coating (although I think I’ll need to give it one more clear coat). I’ve done the usual agonising over what colour a BRM should be and have gone for a mix of Maserati Rifle Grey and Ford Tourmaline Green by spraying with alternate light coats. I think the result is reasonably convincing - in reality its more metallic than it appears in the photographs. Before clear coat After clear coat After clear coat Best Regards David

A quick bulletin on the P57's progress. The body painting is complete, the screen is attached (with very small rivets - fiddly and not entirely to my satisfaction) as are the exhausts, plug leads, injection trumpets and mesh cover. Graham Hill is loosely fitted and looks OK despite his slimming course and an unintended bath in a jar of black paint(!), fortunately before his head had been attached. The mirrors are painted and will be attached this afternoon and then I think its just the decals and a final fitting for Mr Hill. Best Regards David

David, what productivity you have. Not merely one car, not even two, but three! How you folks - there are others - can build more than one car at a time is way beyond me! Thanks for posting your updates.
In the photos here, the windscreen looks good and the rivets look very neat and evenly applied. Of course, photos magnify details, so I'm sure they look even better to the naked eye.
Your color looks very close to my eye. It seems that most builders on the forum here do a pretty good job with BRM green, and yours is no exception. It will be interesting to see all the colors of the several BRMs in the GPD this year.

Thanks Chris. I'm please with the way its turned out -the Dave Jones' shell is so good it would be difficult to make a hash of it! Its a little bit twitchy to drive so I don't think Graham will be winning any championships!
Best Regards
David
