Gentlemen
I have smoked a pipe for many decades, enjoyed imbibing alcohol and own one or two quick-ish cars I no longer use; based on this self-admission, I am public enemy numero uno. To my knowledge building slot cars is not illegal, but probably will be soon, simply because I rather enjoy it.
As we are on the brink of the British GP - yet again - it is useful, perhaps, to reflect, as we all do, on previous battles on the world's great circuits. And also upon the great and beautiful cars created by men for participating in the world's most exciting sport.
It's always interesting to read the views of others, and I would, therefore, be fascinated to learn of your top five Grand Prix machines of all time. With so many to choose from, narrowing the field to just five is almost impossible but I'd be most grateful if you'd have a go, please.

Hello Lawrence welcome to the forum. I expect it depends upon which decade you were born in. I was born in the 50's grew up next to Brands Hatch, so I saw the rear engine revolution, but the BRM V-16 and Vanwall were the stuff of legends. And then came Jim in Colin Chapman's famous creations...and that as they say changed everything. (at the time we all knew Chapman and his Loti, but never dreamed he was responsible for the Vanwall as well).
Lotus 25...the car that changed everything Lotus 33...proof that everything had changed BRM V-16...a brave experiment that could have worked Vanwall...another Chapman design Lotus 49...guess who designed this one.

Chapman also had design input with BRM in the 1950s, of course Raymond Mays and Peter Berthon kept it quiet.

Welcome. A difficult task indeed. For me its down to aesthetics as much as engineering excellence and success on the track. My choices today (but they could change tomorrow!) would be:
Alfa Romeo 158/159 Lotus 25 BRM P261 (low exhaust version) Eagle Weslake Lotus 72 (1970 version)

Fabulous response: thank you all so much. Great GP cars are always a vintage port, but favourites, quite rightly, are the entropic lead into a the best of Mother France's ruin. Happily, we all have our own great, most asymptotic views, and mine - for what they're worth - change on a weekly basis.
Can anyone forget Pedro's 1970 Spa victory in the P160, Jimmy Clark (everywhere), and Jacky Ickx, similarly, in the 312B? Such a list could, of course, go on for ever. Regrettably, I'm so bloody old that I can recall Fangio and company.
Greats must, surely, include the Ernest Henry-designed Peugeot of 1912, Ettore's 35T (Not the 35B), Porsche's 1936 Type C, Chapman's 25 and sundry versions of the MP4. Getting the list down to just 5 is, of course, daft.
Favourites? A very different subject. Let's all have a go, eh? Which 10 slot models would you retain when everything else had gone? And, beyond greats and favourites are those you'd willingly push over a cliff.

In response to your second top 5/10 I'm going to confine my choice to cars I've built rather than ready to runs. The list almost selects itself as my single seater collection is not extensive in terms of built models although I have plenty waiting to be constructed.
1963 Ferrari Aero - my first serious F1 scratch build, Dave Jones body 1966 Cooper Maserati T81 - my first proxy car, Pre-Wing body 1950 Alfa Romeo 158 - GTM kit 1956 Lancia Ferrari D50 - GTM kit 1957 Ferrari 801 - 2015 VRAA proxy entry, Pre-Wing body 1962 BRM P57 Stack Pipe - 2015 VRAA proxy entry, Dave Jones body 1966 BRM P83 H16 - GPd2015 proxy entry Pre-Wing body 1973 Tecno PA123 - GPdDFV 2015 entry, extensively modified BSB body 1949 Maserati 4 CLT - GTM kit Alfa Romeo 12c - GTM kit
Several of the above have appeared in posts on the Forum.
I don't have any GP slot cars I'd like to see go over a cliff - they all take too much time, care and patience!

Well it is clear that the forum has a very strong 1960's fan base!
I would suggest the following cars:
Lotus 49 (yes, I know it is 1960's but who can deny this thing of beauty and engineering game-changer) Lotus 79 (hmmm...guess what, another beautiful car and revolutionary - I know the 78 started the ground effect but the 79 is so much nicer looking) Tyrrell P34 (just because!) Williams FW14 Brabham BT46 (maybe the B version)
I would also give the following an honorary mention: Brawn RB1 Maclaren MP4/4
I shall now get my coat....

I started a list then my ipad went down so all lost.
Forgive me if i'm short therefore.
Vanwall. I know too much to not love it and GP cars should have the engine at the front.... Lotus 16. Just sublime, same reason as above. Lotus 72. It was just so futuristic! Arrived in the cigar era and transformed the world. Even today's cars have the same layout.... Lotus 49. Yeah gorgeous! Williams FW11. What a bit of engineering.
Slotcars... Well they have to be scratches of course.... Brabham bt42, just finished it didn't I? Brabham bt46b, my one of course not the Ghostrax rip off.... Tyrrell P34, enjoyed the monocoque idea and of course the 4 wheel steering. Vanwall gets in there for sheer passion. Lotus 72. Only a PP body but had so much fun building the engine detail. March 721. Ugly duckling, put a lot of effort to get the body right....
Oh that's six!
