1967 GRAND PRIX of/du CANADA PROXY RULES
INTRODUCTION
The 1967 Formula One season was the final year before advertising and aerodynamics changed the look of the sport forever. The cars were still painted in variations of the entrants’ traditional national racing colours that were first adopted in the early days of automobile racing. Visible sponsorship was limited to small stickers from tire, auto parts and petroleum products companies – not mobile cigarette packages. The introduction of wings and other aero devices were still a year off in F1, though they were becoming familiar in sportscar racing. In that sense, 1967 marked the end of F1’s classic era.
CAR ELIGIBILITY
This event is open to 1/32nd scale slot cars modeled on any car that competed in an Official Formula One World Championship Grand Prix during the 1967 season. All entries must be presented in an historically correct race livery from that year. Race numbers between 1 and 99 (no duplicates allowed) may be requested and will be confirmed during registration. Numbers need not be historically accurate. A full Car Eligibility List will be posted separately.
ENTRY REGISTRATION (See separate Registration thread)
Entries will be initially limited to one car per entrant up to a maximum of 24 cars. Please request an entry in the Registration thread when it opens. If an entry of 24 cars has not been reached and paid for by May 1, 2017, the Race Director may open the Registration to a second car from any interested entrant, at a discounted fee, until a full grid is achieved.
DATES AND RACE VENUES
May 1, 2017: All accepted entries must be paid to guarantee a place on the grid. Thereafter, entry positions will be accepted on a first paid basis.
August 25, 2017: All cars must be delivered to me.
September – December 2017: Tech Inspection, Concours Judging and Six Races at Canadian tracks to be detailed later.
CAR CONSTRUCTION RULES
Entries must be 1/32 scale (as claimed by the manufacturer) model slot cars of 1967 F1 cars.
Car Body Construction and Appearance:
Only hard bodies (wood, resin, fiberglass, injection moulded plastic, or fabricated plastic) will be allowed. No Vacuum or “blow” moulded bodies permitted.
Entries must be a reasonably scale representation of a specific, historical Formula One car, in its authentic livery, as it raced in an FIA Championship F1 Grand Prix during 1967. The historically accurate race number is not required. All entries must race with the race number pre-approved by the Race Director during the Registration process. Fantasy paint schemes and fantasy cars are not permitted.
As a minimum, all entries must include the following modeled detail: a period-appropriate driver with head, arms, hands, and partial steering wheel; period appropriate wheel inserts; and, except where not present on or visible from the exterior of the actual car, clear windscreen, roll bar, some 3-D engine detail, gearbox, exhaust system and mirror(s). A reasonable attempt to model the suspension detail of the actual car -- at minimum, upper and lower “A-arms”, radius rods and shocks/springs (if visible) -- is required. See-through interiors -- where the track can be seen when looking straight down around the driver -- and visible, undisguised motors and crown gears are prohibited.
Entries that fail to comply with Appearance rules will be assessed penalties in accordance with the “Schedule of Penalties” (see below).
Chassis and Running Gear:
Chassis may be stock manufactured or fabricated using any material excluding carbon fibre. Both commercially available and scratchbuilt chassis are permitted.
Chassis wheelbase length measurement must be to scale with a permitted tolerance of 1.50mm. If the wheelbase is not fixed, then measurements will be taken at both limits of chassis movement and those measurements must be within the permitted tolerance of 1.50mm. No car may have an overall width in excess of 58mm when measured between the widest extent of the tires on either axle. A list of scale wheelbase measurements will be attached to the bottom of this post. Any challenge to the accuracy of these dimensions must be posted publicly in this thread for review by all and will be subject to a final ruling by the Race Director.
Minimum ground clearance is 1/16" (.0625", or 1.60 mm) except at gear, tires and guide.
Wheels, inserts and tires (see below for limits) should be in keeping with the period.
Tires:
Rears: 20.00mm minimum diameter, maximum width 10.5mm between sidewalls.
Fronts: 18.50mm minimum diameter, maximum width 8.00mm between sidewalls.
Minimum width 6.00mm between sidewalls.
Rear tires must not have a contact patch of more than 10mm width where the tire meets the track at the start of the series.
Tires must be made from a rubber or urethane compound (no silicones or sponge rubber) and must be black or dark grey in color. No chemicals or oil may be applied to the tires. No clear paint or polish on front tires. Front tires must be soft enough to deflect under light thumbnail pressure.
All tires must have an outer sidewall bulge. The inner sidewall does not have to have the bulge but must be rounded from the sidewall to the tread area.
Motor Specifications
Any FF-050 format (slimline) motor, available from a mainstream manufacturer or retailer, is permitted. The motor must remain unopened and as received from the seller. No magnet upgrades or rewinds allowed.
Gears may not be visible from above.
A single Guide is permitted and must not to be visible from directly above the car in the straight ahead position. No Slot.it wood Guide flags (or similar) and all Guides must be able to fit through a Scalextric R1 hairpin turn. No portion of the Guide that projects into the slot below the reference plane of the track surface may exceed the following dimensions:
Guide Blade Depth 0.225"/5.715mm
Guide Blade Thickness 0.065"/1.65mm
Guide Blade Length 0.827"/21.00mm
The above measurements will be verified with the car sitting on a flat, slotted setup block with the front tires in contact with the reference plane. If the front tires cannot make contact, the measurements will be made with the pickup braids flattened and the full front weight of the car bearing on the Guide.
No traction magnets are permitted.
Owners name or Forum ID should be written on the bottom of the chassis.
Entries that fail to comply with Chassis and Running Gear rules will be assessed penalties in accordance with the “Schedule of Penalties” (see below). Easily correctable infractions may be fixed by the Race Director, with the permission of the Entrant, and will be assessed a one-time penalty. Minor infractions not easily correctable may be raced, at the discretion of the Race Director, but will be assessed penalties on a per race basis. Cars with major infractions of the rules and technical problems that jeopardize the safe and efficient conduct of the event will be excluded and returned to the Entrant for repair.
SCHEDULE OF PENALTIES
After Tech Inspection, the Race Director will assess penalties for infractions of the Car Appearance Rules and the Chassis and Running Gear Rules as follows:
Car Appearance penalties are assessed once at start of season.
Car Livery – fantasy or grossly inauthentic (–10 points)
Car Cockpit – see-through to track (-5 points)
Wheel inserts - missing (-10 points) or not historically correct (–5 points)
Suspension detail - minimum detail absent (–10 points per axle)
Driver – missing (-20 points) or historically incorrect (-10 points)
Other missing details (where required) - (-5 points per item)
Chassis and Running Gear penalties are assessed on a per race basis for as long as the car remains non-compliant.
Wheelbase measurement – outside permitted tolerance (-5 points)
Width measurement – between 58mm and 60mm (-5 points); over 60mm (exclusion)
Tires – diameter outside spec (-2 points)
- rear tire width or contact patch minor infraction (-5 points)
- other minor infractions (-2 points)
- rear tire width over 12mm (exclusion)
- material not approved (exclusion)
Ground Clearance - less than spec (-5 points), chassis contact danger (exclusion)
Guide or Gear visible from above (-2 points)
Guide – size infraction (-5 points)
CONCOURS D’ELEGANCE
The Concours d’Elegance will be a contest separate from the race results with a distinct prize and will be conducted as follows:
Factory painted bodies will not be eligible for the Concours d'Elegance.
All Concours cars must be replicas of an actual car in an historic race. The following elements will be judged based principally on their accuracy and craftsmanship in replicating the original race car.
Twenty points will be available for the construction, fit and finish of the body; including paint, decals, mirrors, roll bar, ignition box, windscreen, injector stacks, gear box, grill work and screens.
Ten points will be available for the driver detailing and cockpit details: including the dashboard, shifter, steering wheel and seat.
Fifteen points will be available for the suspension detail including; A arms, radius arms, tie rods, shocks, springs, sway bars, uprights and brakes.
The last five points will be given for how well the car looks going around the track.
We encourage you to send photographic and other provenance of the historic F1 car upon which your model is based to aid the judge(s) in their decision.
RACE PROCEDURES, SCOREKEEPING AND CHAMPIONSHIP
Races will be conducted at between 10 volts and 12 volts at the discretion of the Race Host and according to the characteristics of the track. Race conditions, including driver and lane rotation, must be equal for all cars. Run order of cars and Race Heat organization should be either in order or reverse order of the fastest laps attained in a pre-Race Qualifying Session.
Tires should be wiped clean before each Race Heat with a dry or damp cloth or finger. No solvents or other chemicals should be applied to the tires, including lighter fluid or Simple Green.
A car with a minor technical problem (lost screw, loose wheel, gear, braid, etc.) may be repaired by the Race Host before, during or between Race Heats, though a Race Heat should not be halted or delayed while such a repair is made. No penalty will be assessed beyond racing laps lost during the repair.
Any major repairs will only be made between races at the discretion of the Race Host and with the permission of the Entrant. Otherwise, a broken car will be returned to the Entrant for repair at his expense. The Race Director must be advised of all major repairs or car returns. No penalty will be assessed beyond Championship Points lost due to missed races.
Finishing order for each round of the proxy race will be determined by total number of laps and 10ths of laps, within a set amount of time. A minimum of 12 (maximum of 15) minutes racing time per car is required at each track. Fastest race laps must be recorded for each car. The points won according to the finishing positions for each round from first place to twenty-fourth are:
50-44-40-36-34-32-30-28-26-24-22-20-18-16-14-12-10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3 with a fastest race lap bonus of 2 points.
At the conclusion of all the rounds, the total of all the points won, less any penalties assessed, shall determine the Proxy Champion for this season.
ENTRY INFO
Entry fee is CAN$30 for all entrants. A second entry, if accepted, will cost CAN$10. Entry fees are non-refundable except in the event of the cancellation of the proxy. Entry fees will cover shipping costs between races, return of car to entrant and hopefully some prizes at the end of this event. Shipping costs of entries from Entrant to Race Director at the beginning of the event are the responsibility of the Entrant. If the car is crossing international borders, please declare the car as a “Used Toy Car To Be Returned To Owner After Competition” and state a nominal value of $20 on the Customs Declaration. Funds will be tight enough on this series. I don’t want to pay taxes and duty on your entry!
I will provide a Paypal address for registration fee payments at a later date.
I will provide a ship-to address for entries at a later date.
All cars entered must be accompanied by a printed “CAR DATA FORM” that contains the following information:
Car Number
Entrant’s Forum ID and Actual Name
