I'm building this for early birds in about 6 weeks time. I've decided to dispense with my usual approach of a slimline motor in order to get plenty of breaking and acceleration torque. Cars at EB's are extremely quick! So I've opted for a slot.it flat six motor and given it 2mm offset. Gearing is 8:32.

With that gearing you will have brakes aplenty. Car looks short wheelbase.

Indeed, lots of brakes. I will take a range of gears with me in case I need them! Yes the wheelbase is very short, to be honest I'm building this car only because its the only shell of this period I have. 67.5mm I think.

A little progress off and on over the weekend. I've cut a lot of thick resin out of the shell, formed the openings, refined the top front of the side Pods as they were too far forward, recut the panel lines, shaped the dash board and thinned the resin around every orifice! Once the putty dries I can start to sand back and then we can move to the next stage....

The motor choice is good but gearing seems too aggressive,i would go for 9/32 (keep in mind that i have never managed to finish better than midfield). Also keep in mind that with 2 mm offset it will chew gears smaller than 27 in a couple of laps

Hi Alexis Thanks for the feedback. I've only ever managed second from last so midfield is just a dream!! Surely 8:32 is LESS aggressive than 9:32?? I mean, 9:32 will be faster on the straights and give less brakes? For me the fundamental thing is staying on the track. The amount of offs is what brings my lap times up.... So I figure something easy to drive is the key! Cheers Andi

What i mean by aggressive is that reaction to trigger pressing will be more violent. At Wolves i think it is more important to have a smooth curve exit than to have brakes. And if you have a Slot.it controller you can learn to use the hand brake,(it overrides brake setting giving you full brakes-it was worth a couple of tenths per lap at the local club track)you will need to use it twice ,at the end of the main straight and at the end of the back straight and since the straights are quite long you can arm the hand brake easily.

Sweet!
...about that 2mm offset...? Ummm, is there some place you can buy 2mm-offset crown gears? Or is the crown swiped out of a Revell-Monogram Cooper-Cobra or similar car, and somehow made refittable?
Or maybe there is a technique I don't know about where a standard gear is somehow ground into service as an offset gear?
Honest, I promise not to abuse the knowledge I seek......??

Hello Max, How are things in Marin?
I dont know about buying a 2mm offset gear but a cigarette lighter flame can burn/melt/soften the teeth of a plastic gear to a working standard. It can be an adventure if your chassis is plastic but on brass and wire chassis it can smoothen the mesh. Start with a tight mesh and apply the flame with the motor turning the gears over at low revs...brass pinion/plastic gear is an ideal combo for this treatment.

Hey John, thanks for the informative reply! I will have to try this. Things are well at this end of the table, if just a bit cosmically weird. But the California population is enjoying its first truly rainy winter in 6 or more years, so that helps. Its been especially wet here in west Marin, trees uprooting and mushrooms sprouting. Good time to stay indoors and work on miniature race cars. Hope all is well with you, good to be in touch.

Yes, I wasn't thinking to put a naked flame anywhere near my gears thanks! They have been very carefully engineered by my friend Maurizio Ferrari.....

You would be surprised how much "naked flame" the plastic gears can take...it is tough stuff.

A question to those who know...
Would the wheel spinners (on this car three ear) have been chrome or bare metal? I know the wheels were not chromed but I wondered about the spinners?
If not then what is the best way to get the chrome off of plastic spinners?
Cheers Andi
