TERRY’S TWO ON THE TROT
After the Qualy Session at Round 1 of the season, nothing hinted that Terry’s #47 Honda would even contend for victory at Mesa Roja, never mind dominate that race and the one that followed. This reporter figured that the car was a solid mid-field prospect, easy to drive but unremarkable. It was, after all, only 7th on the grid, a good half-second back of the pole-winning Lotus, and surrounded by a scrum of ten cars that qualified within a few tenths of one another.
Race day, however, was another matter entirely. The #47 won by a lap from the #11 Eagle and scored the fastest race lap to boot. More tellingly, the next closest car was over five laps back. The Honda had simply come alive in the race while others struggled and faded. Was this an anomaly on a circuit that is something of an outlier in the series?
Round 2 at Circuit Courville answered that question. In a word: No. Right from Qualy, the #47 led the field, two-tenths ahead of the #4 Lotus and well clear of the rest of the pack. In the race, the red and white Honda simply ran away from everyone, finishing seven laps clear of the second place Lotus and ten laps ahead of Datto’s McLaren in third. Even at this early stage of the championship, the question is: Can anyone else keep Terry’s Honda in sight, never mind catch up and overhaul it? It sits atop the Championship Standings with a perfect score of 104 points.
As for the rest, Chris’s #4 Lotus and Datto’s #19 McLaren came back from Race 1 misfortune to claim podium positions in Race 2. Andi’s Eagle-Climax slipped from a fine 2nd place at the Mesa to 5th at Courville, but that belies the fact that it was only a single lap from a step on the Race 2 podium as well. The Eagle clings to 2nd in the Standings at 78 points, only 2 points ahead of the resurgent Lotus and 10 points clear of Datto’s McLaren. Richard’s Cooper faded rather more, from 3rd on the Mesa podium to only 7th in round 2, but still sits 5th in the Standings on 65 points.
David’s Ferrari plummeted from a promising 4th place finish at the Mesa to a disappointing 12th at Courville. That leaves the red car 6th in the Championship. Marek’s Ferrari looked like it was on track to overcome a poor 11th in round one when it qualified a surprising 3rd in Quebec, only to slip to an 8th place finish.
On a positive note, Chappy’s #23 Honda improved from 8th in race 1 to 4th at Courville, while Val’s #14 McLaren climbed from 11th to 6th place. Both would be higher in the Series Championship Standings if not for Penalty Points assessed. Aloha’s Eagle recovered from round 1 transmission problems to finish race 2 in 10th, and RIR’s Lotus 49 found some traction to improve from last place at the Mesa to a pleasing 9th at Courville.
Ecurie Martini’s Eagle could only manage an 11th place finish at Courville after a promising 5th place debut at the opening round. Brian’s “nose job” BRM similarly fell from 7th to 13th, while Thomas’s Lola-BMW slipped from 9th to 14th. All could easily turn their seasons around at the next track and figure again in the top half of the field.
Old23’s #1 Brabham slithered to last place in round 2 and anchors the Overall Standings in a tie for last place with Thomas’s Lola, but without the excuse of penalty points holding it back! Ah well, maybe everything will come right in round 3….
