Many of you may recognise my user name from other forums. My real name is Tony Avis and I had a small involvement in slot racing in the 60's. I used to visit MRDC in Westcliff-on-Sea on a Saturday morning and pay to trundle my secondhand 1/24 Monogram Chaparral around for an hour and I later had the odd go of other people's cars at Wonderland but I never actually raced as I didn't have a competitive car. I also helped Reg Chapman try to revive Estuary Equipe for a while in the late 60's.
In 1988 I opened a model shop in Southend-on-Sea and a customer told me that the owner of Wonderland wanted to sell the former Tottenham Raceways AMF King and I became involved in an abortive attempt to buy the track. I then worked with Neil Simmonds (son of Laurie Simmonds who had owned MDRC) to set up an AMF Queen (ex Butlins) and start a slotcar club in an army camp in Shoeburyness but we both had other commitments and we abandoned the idea.
After replying to a post on a forum which stated I had abandoned the Tottenham King in an Army camp in Kent I was contacted by David Lawson who told me about Southend Slot Racing Club which is about 10 mins drive from my home. I had worked with David in the 70s but had no idea that he was a slot racer at that time. I joined the club and have been racing for about 7 years. I have raced at Double Trouble a couple of times and at a few CSCRA events as well as the 2019 Policar Grand Prix at Gaydon.
Hoping for better times in 2021 so that we can all go racing again.
