Well the race has been run and the results are in. it seems I missed the boat on gear ratio by a mile. The 50 K motor in the Mercedes was only running 17.8 K through the speed traps. The 40K motor in the Auto Union was only pulling about 16.5 K at the speed traps.
We did gear the Auto Union down a bit and the speeds did come up from practice but not enough to beat NSR cars that took the top three spots in the Manufacturers class.
The Auto Union got in three respectable runs and got faster each round with a 41.336 mph a 42.093mph and a 42.538 mile per hour passes on stock Carrera tires.
The Mercedes sporting the O ring tires had plenty of grip and was able to bend the teeth over on two Slot It crown gears. Note to self make sure to check the mesh each run. It had runs on Saturday of 47.293 mph 22.395mph with a destroyed gear and a 47.573 mph run with the lower gears out of the Auto Union but you could hear the tires spin a long way down the track.
It suffered two horrific crashes in practice runs on Friday night. The first crash was when the front body screw came out at speed and got traped under the car causing it to flip into the air and catch the timing"boxes" that knocked off the front wheel covers. It travels about 40 feet past the point of impact with the timing lights. The second crash was when the front magnet came off the car after it had passed the timing lights. The glue holding it on held but the plating pulled away from the magnet. It left the track at top speed coasted about 70 feet before it clipped a pallet and then started tumbling the the rest of the way to the end of the building where it hit the garage door and bounced back about 20 feet. The front wheel bearing was broken into shards and the front axle was bent. The rest of the car was just lightly scuffed, Man Carrera builds some tough cars.
Here is a shot from the starting line and you can see the timing boxes just before the doorway into the second part of the building. The garage door is the light at the end of the tunnel. .
From where it ended up looking back to the track it came off at the doorway which is the white wall. .
