I went to the Revival Meeting at Goodwood yesterday where as part of the programme they were celebrating the 50th anniversary of Jim Clark's 1963 World Championship. There was a cavalcade of almost every car he drove during his career. I've seen them all before with the exception of these three rare gems. 1965 Lotus 38 - Indianapolis winner 1966 Lotus 43 - USA Grand Prix winner 1968 Lotus 56 - Indianapolis test by Clark in March 1968 I have always wanted to see the Lotus 38 and it didn't disappoint, it looked absolutely gorgeous and Dario Franchitti looked the part in his retro overalls and helmet. The 43 has just been beautifully restored and it was the first time I've heard an H-16 BRM engine in action. I've seen a Lotus 56B race in period at Brands Hatch and Silverstone but I've not seen the 56 before. It was good to hear the car's almost silent turbine again as it lapped Goodwood. David

A few more from the cavalcade. 1965 Lotus 33 - World Championship winner. I've seen this particular car race for a good few years in historic racing but at last they have the correct type wheels and tyres fitted. 1965 Lotus 40 - I know it shouldn't be on this forum but it is a wonderful car. The passenger reminds me that DSJ was driven round Brands Hatch in this car by Clark back in the day. 1961 Lotus 21 - I've seen this actual chassis in the Donington Collection before but it has now been sold and is in running condition again. This is the 1961 Italian GP car only used for that one race. 1967/68 Lotus 48 - Formula 2 car. This is the last surviving chassis of this type. David

Thanks for posting these David. The Lotus 38 and 43 are just fantastic. I would loved to have heard the H16 motor.
I find it truly amazing these iconic examples of motor racing history are still in existence (and working order) many decades later since first competing.

David,
Thanks for those spectacular pictures.
The 1.5L cars look so small, but my favorite photo is the Lotus 43.
DSJ.. would that be Denis Jenkinson?

Great shots! I really gotta get to Goodwood one of these years. That Lotus 38 just has a mean look to it that the others never quite had. Especially with those yellow DOHC pipes at the back.

Nigel
I use a Canon EOS10D and a range of Canon lenses, for the pictures in this thread I used my 100-400mm.

This is just to show how friendly the folks are at Goodwood (I wouldn't have put this in, but I think it is Jim Clarks old Cortina )

This is just to show how friendly the folks are at Goodwood (I wouldn't have put this in, but I think it is Jim Clarks old Cortina ) Nigel's fantasy is obviously to be a US Army Air Force pilot, circa 1943. Yes, the officer in that picture is Nigel, looking very happy.. and why not? Note: Nigel sent me this picture, and I couldn't resist posting it.. even though there is no car in it.. not even a Cortina.. I promise not to do it again. But I think Nigel had more fun at Goodwood then he has let on!

And another I don't think they should wear the modern helmets at the Revival. Regards Nigel 1. I don't mean to sound like Sir Stirling Moss.. but that heavy duty roll bar should be yanked off the car... to hell with driver safety! 2. I do mean to sound like Mark Huber: That driver should be banned for not only wearing a full face helmet but one that looks like exploding confetti! That is an insult to the eye. 3. Lovely Lotus 21 otherwise. Thanks Nigel!
