Last night in bed I pulled out of my bedside cabinet drawer my copy of the Marlboro GP guide.
It is a small softback edition purchased in the early 1970's from the Brands Hatch bookshop on my first visit there.
I must have purchased it a year or two after it was published by Kreuzer, Zurich in 1972, as I remember it was discounted!
The front cover is a lovely matt photo finish and has a close up of Reine Wisell the Swedish driver in his green full face helmet, in a red and white Marlboro BRM.
Now, I am lost in the sixties, as in retrospect I like that era so much more than the seventies, but looking through my old book I can see why I was hooked on F1 Grand Prix racing when I eventually got to see it up close.
This little book is a cracker that captures the essence of the time and people who were involved in F1 in the early 70's.
Not only does it have a report on all the Grand Prix races of 1971 it also has write ups on the sports car series of the year, when the mighty 917's 512's and 312P's were making history.
Driver profiles introduce all the main players as well as lesser known drivers before a section of beautiful free hand drawings and notes on the cars of the teams.
These include sketches of car or chassis, details of the teams manager engineer and drivers with car specification alongside the illustrations, done by Werner Buherer.
For each race there are sections on competitors, qualifying positions and results with a circuit diagram. Following that there is a photo montage of the event and then a large track map and notes about the venues history and race itself.
The same format is applied to the sports cars section and altogether it is one of the most interesting motor racing books I have ever read.
If you are a fan of the early 70's racing you would love this book, if you remember the time, it will bring back lots of memories and if you can't, you will be able to see what a fantastic time it was in motor racing at that time.
Regards
Nigel
